Ipsos Mori Poll, 6 out of 10 people know someone with addiction problems.

A new Ipsos Mori survey reveals the extent of alcohol and drug addiction. Almost six in ten people claim to know someone with an alcohol, drugs or mental health problem reveals new poll commissioned by Inexcess Television. A real measure of the extent of alcohol and drug addiction in Britain has been revealed in a new survey by Ipsos MORI for Inexcess Television - with 57% of people saying they know someone with an alcohol or drugs problem at addiction level (where addiction is classed as an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence), or a mental health problem. The broadband station (www.inexcess.tv), which specialises in addiction and recovery, commissioned Ipsos MORI’s online omnibus survey of 1,041 people aged 16-64 to test the assertion made by many of the healthcare professionals and people interviewed by Inexcess over the last 18 months that ‘today most people know someone with a drink, drugs or mental health problem at addiction level’. Comments former BBC and ITN broadcaster, Ed Mitchell, who has just been appointed as Inexcess Editor, marking his return to television and first employment following his battle with alcohol and homelessness: “This statement keeps coming up in our discussions with healthcare professionals, so we thought we would test it. 43 per cent said a family member, friend or work colleague had an alcohol or drug addiction, that’s not binge drinking, hazardous drinking or recreational drug use, its hardcore addiction, and the figure rises to 57% when you include mental health problems which are so often either the cause or the effect of addiction.”

Ed Mitchell, Inexcess Television’s very own Alan Whicker reports from Mauritius on the risks of relapse on holiday. Figures show that people say they drink up to three times as much as they normally do when they’re on holiday. For most there’s an automatic association between being on holiday and alcohol consumption. So for the recovering alcoholic, there’s a real risk of relapse. Ed offers some advice on how to avoid returning to drinking and get even more out of your holidays.

Inexcess Press Conference

Its been a very special week for Inexcess, Ed Mitchell joined us as Station Editor and we broadcast his first production, the third programme on his life following the ITV documentaries ‘Saving Ed Mitchell’ and ‘What Happened Next’. Ed revisits the places that were the backdrop to his addiction and bringing the story up to date. At the press conference we also announced our plans for ‘2010 Year of Recovery’ a campaign to raise the profile of addiction and recovery and help to dispel the myths and stigma surrounding the issue. More on 2010 soon. Ed Mitchell, Lost and Found. A new documentary on the latest steps to recovery of former BBC and ITN broadcaster, Ed Mitchell, can be seen exclusively on Inexcess TV - marking Ed’s return to television and first employment following his battle with alcohol and homelessness. In his new role as editor at Inexcess Television, Ed produced and directed his latest documentary, Ed Mitchell: Lost and Found, the third programme to be broadcast on Ed’s life story, from living as a white-collar tramp to his subsequent recovery from alcoholism. It follows the two prime-time documentaries, Saving Ed Mitchell and Ed Mitchell: What Happened Next? for ITV. Almost two years on from his last drink in December 2007, Ed revisits the places that played an important part in his homelessness and subsequent recovery in this latest mini documentary. He explains his thoughts and feelings on what happened to him and what he has learnt that might be useful to others. Ed also chats with his son, Freddie, and to his partner, Mandy, who gave up alcohol on the same day as he did. 2009 has been a turning point for Ed. His book, From Headlines to Hard Times was published to great acclaim in January, telling Ed’s candid story of how he battled the demons of alcohol and debt which led ultimately to his homelessness, and also now his return to broadcasting as editor at Inexcess.tv. Commenting on his new appointment and first programme for Inexcess Television, Ed Mitchell said: “Becoming editor of Inexcess Television is the perfect job. I’ll be able to use my thirty years in journalism, the experience of recovery from alcoholism and the trauma of homelessness to help others. I am painfully aware of what it was like to feel alone and have nowhere to turn. Inexcess Television will go some way to responding to that need.” Inexcess.tv uses the power of personal experience and techniques of television coupled with the accessibility of the internet to help anyone when drink, drugs or other excessive behaviour have become a problem in their life, or the lives of others.

Ed Mitchell to join Inexcess.tv

Former BBC and ITN broadcaster Ed Mitchell is to join Inexcess Television as Editor from October 5th 2009. Ed Mitchell was one of Europe’s leading business broadcasters for many years interviewing hundreds of top financial and political figures. He worked with some of the world’s most respected news organisations including Reuters, the BBC, ITN, Channel Four, European Business Channel (Zurich), Asia Business News (Singapore), European Business News (London) and CNBC. He was regularly on News at Ten, Budget programmes, lunchtime and breakfast television, and a well-known face in City dealing rooms. His career then took a rockier course. Redundancy, dozens of short term jobs, mounting debt problems, alcoholism, divorce and bankruptcy led to homelessness and sleeping rough on Hove seafront. A quirk of fate got him into rehab and on to the path of recovery – a story covered in the ITV documentary Saving Ed Mitchell. Commenting on his appointment, Ed Mitchell said “Becoming Editor of Inexcess Television is the perfect job. I’ll be able to use my thirty years in journalism, the experience of recovery from alcoholism and the trauma of homelessness to help others. I am painfully aware of what it was like to feel alone and have nowhere to turn. Inexcess Television will go some way to responding to that need.” Founded in March 2008 by George Williams, a successful businessman and himself a recovering alcoholic, Inexcess is about to undergo extensive expansion. This includes Ed Mitchell’s appointment, increased programme output plus external commissions for film productions on behalf of healthcare/recovery providers. There are also plans to take Inexcess around the country in 2010 for multi-media road shows hosted by top industry experts. Ed Mitchell’s first programme for Inexcess TV will be a third documentary on his homelessness and subsequent recovery. It follows the two prime-time documentaries, Saving Ed Mitchell and Ed Mitchell: What Happened Next? For ITV which attracted huge audiences. It will be available exclusively on inexcess.tv from October 9 2009.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Revisited

Here, we take the opportunity to revisit the topic of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), first covered in series three. PTSD is a debilitating condition that can develop as the result of experiencing a severely traumatic event. In the above film, we explore the relationship between the disorder and its prevalence in servicemen and women returning from the frontline. Meanwhile, we also hear firsthand how PTSD can change the lives of those it affects, while examining how perceptions of the condition have changed as our understanding of it has improved. Since we last covered this topic, the number of British casualties resulting from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has increased dramatically, meaning there are sure to be more soldiers returning from active duty who will still be coming to terms with the traumas they have experienced. With this in mind, the film raises questions about how active service affects soldiers on the frontline, and what can be done to help those men and women who are forced to relive their traumas everyday due to post traumatic stress disorder… What is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder? Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that can affect anyone. It is estimated to affect 5 per cent of men and 10 per cent of women and can occur at any age, including childhood. As discussed in the film, PTSD can affect servicemen and women who have seen action in war zones. However it is also prevalent in people who have been the victims of abuse, who have been involved in a near death experience, or those who have lost a loved one. The symptoms of PTSD can arise shortly after a traumatic event, or in some cases years and even decades later - depending on the nature of the individual concerned. Adults can even be diagnosed with symptoms that are linked to a traumatic experience stemming from their childhood that has not manifested itself until later life. Due to the prominence of PTSD in soldiers returning from war, it may come as no surprise that the condition was first recognised by modern medicine during the First World War, with soldiers’ memories of the trenches haunting them long after they returned home. Subsequent wars, namely the Vietnam War and the Falklands conflict, have both helped to increase our understanding of this condition and helped to formulate ways of treating it. Symptoms. Once symptoms do start to manifest, individuals typically re-experience the trigger event is some way, usually through flashbacks, nightmares and / or intrusive images or feelings. Physiologic reactions, such as palpitations, sweating, or symptoms and signs of panic, commonly occur. In order to cope with these events, the person usually attempts to avoid situations that might trigger the memories. In addition, the person may remain in a state of high arousal and become hyper-vigilant, irritable, and increasingly likely to startle. In some cases, the person may develop a numbing of the senses as a defence against the intolerable reliving of the emotional trauma. Sadly, if not recognized and treated, these symptoms have been shown to increase the risk of social isolation, job loss, divorce, illness, drug use, alcoholism and even suicide. A normal reaction to an abnormal event. If you suspect that you or a loved one has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it’s important to seek help right away. The sooner PTSD is confronted, the easier it is to overcome. If you’re reluctant to seek help, keep in mind that PTSD is not a sign of weakness, and the only way to overcome it is to confront what happened to you and learn to accept it as a part of your past. This process is much easier with the guidance and support of an experienced therapist or doctor. It’s only natural to want to avoid painful memories and feelings. But if you try to numb yourself and push your memories away, post-traumatic stress disorder will only get worse. The memories at the source of the trauma will not fade completely – they emerge under stress or whenever you let down your guard – and trying to do so is exhausting. The avoidance will ultimately harm your relationships, your ability to function, and the quality of your life. Help is at hand. Treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder relieves symptoms by helping you deal with the trauma you’ve experienced. Rather than avoiding the trauma and any reminder of it, you’ll be encouraged in treatment to recall and process the emotions and sensations you felt during the original event. In addition to offering an outlet for emotions you’ve been bottling up, treatment for PTSD will also help restore your sense of control and reduce the powerful hold the memory of the trauma has on your life. There are a number of therapies available that can relieve the symptoms of PTSD, including a multitude of different counselling techniques and medication. The support of family and friends is also proven to be a valuable factor in helping sufferers come to terms with their trauma. As everyone is unique, so will be your path to recovery. The sooner the symptoms are addressed the better, and it is recommended that those experiencing PTSD should seek the help of a doctor as soon as possible. For further advice on post traumatic stress disorder; its symptoms and avenues of treatment, please visit the NHS PTSD advice webpage, or if you believe you are suffering from the condition, seek the advice of your GP, who will be able to recommend the best course of action for you.

Drugs, Prison and Recovery Revisited

Prison turning offenders into drug addicts - Illegal drugs are so widespread in prison that more inmates are leaving with an addiction to a substance than when they initially arrived. Overcrowding and staff shortages mean that prisoners are forced to spend an increasing amount of time confined to their cell. As a result many are turning to drugs such as heroin, cocaine and cannabis to relieve their boredom and as a source of distraction. An investigation in February 2009 from one such prison, Craiginches in Aberdeen, revealed that 79 per cent of prisoners tested positive for drugs in random tests, however this figure falls to 67 per cent when inmates are tested on release. The report shows that Aberdeen has the highest rate of prisoners failing drug tests when they are freed, frequently testing positive for cannabis, benzodiazepines such as Valium, heroin and other opiates, and methadone. Drugs are so rife in prisons, it seems that people both inside and outside of prison are finding more creative ways to smuggle in drugs such as heroin. One former inmate, who would prefer his identity to remain anonymous, told how he had heroin brought in by visitors, delivered to him through the post where it was stitched into clothes or stuck into an ‘I Love You’ card between the peeled back sheets of the card. He would often carry his heroin in his anus to avoid detection but was found positive on a number of occasions through random drug testing and an extra 14 days were added to his sentence. He says: “Prison is like a little community. You see the same faces in and out and we all seem to get on the heroin. It’s all about the drugs.” Prison Overcrowding. Since 1997, the prison population has increased by almost 25,000 people, which may in part be due to governments own addiction to imprisonment. However such claims of ‘overcrowding’ are often blamed on those with an addiction to illegal substances and the medias portrayals of a stereotypical drug user who will go to any lengths to feed their addiction and do almost anything to achieve their next ‘hit’. It comes as no surprise then that as the number of prison inmates reached a record high that the news and media turn their attention to drug users in order to attribute a degree of blame and reasoning behind such figures. The most recent figures released by the HM Prison Service reveal that the total number of inmates at the week ending 21st August 2009 totalled 84,139; a new record high. What is being done? The Prison Service has stated that they are trying to tackle the extensive availability of drugs in prison and are committed to the rehabilitation of drug using prisoners. Every prison has a ‘CARAT’ programme, which stands for counselling, assessment, referral, advice and throughcare. This programme means that every person entering the prison service with a drug problem is assessed and allocated a ‘CARAT worker’ who coordinate their care and provide support, basic information about drugs, their effects and ways to reduce harm and aid those prisoners who want to give up or cut down on their misusing. ‘CARAT workers’ also refer a prisoner to a drug treatment rehabilitation programme and detoxification which is perhaps most valuable when a person is experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Rebuilding Lives on the South Coast - Recovery Through Regeneration

Inexcess was privileged to be invited to the Hope Farm Open Day in Littlehampton, West Sussex. This is a project that brings together fighting homelessness and its associated problems with regeneration of a derelict building and land. Littlehampton is a friendly, picturesque town, one of those hidden secrets of the UK. If you’re not looking for the signs of homelessness or vulnerable people you would be forgiven for thinking homelessness and connected problems must be in the bigger cities on the south coast. The Hope Farm Project brings together two major forces for good – HOMElink and Skills in Partnership. At the heart of the project is the need to provide support and training to homeless people including help to find recovery from alcohol and substance misuse. Users of the project will help to renovate a derelict nursery and its surrounding land and then staff the new project including; a restaurant, farm, craft and plant shop, training and education centre, specialist herb growing centre and local artists gallery. Along the way the service users will gain in confidence, take part in training and be offered the opportunity to gain qualifications that should lead onto employment and a fresh start. We were able to speak to Tony Moran of HOMElink and Ray Collom and Paul Woodcock of Skills in Partnership. They tell us where the idea for the project came from and how it is being pulled together and built. We were also able to speak to Paul and Dawn who have been involved in the the project and who have benefited from the development. This project is making great progress on the south coast and we hope to revisit it in the near future to see how things are progressing and hopefully to catch up with Dawn and Paul. It would be great to think that this sort of regeneration and recovery for individuals and communities could be seen in other areas of the country. If you have similar projects and stories please get in touch.

Ronnie Purslow - Family Constellations workshop participants

Part two of our film with Ronnie covers the weekend workshop he delivered at Sharp, Liverpool. We speak with Ronnie who led the weekend, Jacquie Johnson-Lynch who was one of the weekend assistants and three participants on the workshop. Ronnie has written these words to provide background to himself and the weekend and Jacquie has added her thoughts: In early 2005 I created Innerlight now known as Heartstream. I lead workshops and trainings which integrate all I have learnt through my journey of the last 9 years. I work extensively with, Breathwork and Family Constellations. I have studied around the world with such teachers as Bert Hellinger (Family Constellations) and Leonard Orr (Integrated Breathwork/Re-Birthing) and Duane O’Kane (Transpersonal sychotherapy/ACIM). Nearly 3 years ago, through training with Duane O’Kane (a transpersonal psychotherapist in Vancouver, Canada) I met Jacquie Johnston-Lynch the Head of Service at SHARP Liverpool. She too was in recovery and continuing her personal and professional development with transpersonal and spiritual Leadership Training. Jacquie says, “After getting to know Ronnie I could see his mode of facilitating and leading workshops really had something to offer the recovering community. We really wanted to bring his work to the treatment centre but we had to clearly weigh up the risks. The work can be anxiety raising in itself. It creates and uncovers the very feelings that clients had self soothed with heroin, alcohol, crack, cocaine, marijuana etc. We had to be sure that we weren’t setting up a whole load of relapse triggers, when what in effect we were wanting to do was strengthen, deepen and increase capacity for change and growth in recovery. Eventually we came to an agreement that we would pilot a weekend called SOUL RECOVERY with clients who had graduated treatment and/or had at least 15 weeks clean and sober. Each client who wanted to attend had to have a brief session with me so that I could make them aware of what it was they were putting themselves forward for. I would also liaise with their focal counsellor or the continuing care worker to ascertain how robust they were currently presenting as within the project. We have now held 4 weekend workshops and are in the process of planning more for 2008. As yet, we don’t have empirical evidence to validate the efficacy of the work, but we are keeping on-going records and longer term evaluations. There has become a core group of clients who are clearly seen as ‘stepping up’ their recovery and having their emotional and spiritual development come in to alignment with their physical and cognitive well being. Some of the workshop participants have now got two or three years cleantime and are being supported to practically ‘assist’ on the workshops. Hellinger’s work of Family Constellations calls for “representatives” and this is met through the work of the assistants team.” Jacquie and I both have personal experience of the work and been trained in our respective areas and used this to make informed and calculated choices about what might work. By trusting the clients thirst for change and working at the level of willingness and strength they have, we have created a rich and powerful workshop which has brought many struggling addicts in early recovery to life again. By opening up the ‘inner field’ of the person in a group environment supports clients to understand themselves and each other on a deeper level. As we do this we can uncover feelings which have long been buried and these are not just sadness, guilt and pain. We also support happiness, joy and peace and the focus is really on uncovering more life force. To learn the lessons from our past, celebrate who we are and get excited about where we are going. Give the already inspired recovering addict more strength to pursue their dreams. To support addicts to redirect all the determination, focus and passion they used in active addiction in a more positive way. As the facilitator I have to be sensitive to each client’s needs and abilities and respect the pace at which they wish to work. Addressing family issues helping clients connect with their feelings and looking at what is needed for each individual. We never know what will be in the room but I am ready to work with the client as far as they are willing to go. Everything we do is an invite but as time goes on people show more and more willingness. I have no intention of making addicts small and no intention to take them further than they can go. I just have a passion to support the people I love, to have a more love and hope filled recovery. I love supporting extraordinary people with an extraordinary past, live an extraordinary recovery.

Ronnie Purslow is a remarkable man. From drinking at 12 and locked up at 13 Ronnie’s is a story of fighting authority, in what ever form, and eventually fighting himself. From being excluded by society Ronnie was also excluded in the prison system until the day he was confronted by his two sons – that is when he new he had to change. With the help of Rapt (Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) he turned things around and was able to move on in his life. Ronnie was in Liverpool to deliver a Family Constellations workshop and took the time to talk to Inexcess TV. This is the first part of that interview where Ronnie talks with passion about his life, his family, prison and his recovery.

In the first of our two part interview with Bob Beckett, the founder of UK Advocates, Bob talks about the organisation and how UK Advocates has sought a leading London counsel’s opinion on possible legal action on the grounds of medical negligence regarding the lack of, or haphazard nature, of individual PCTs treatment provision and the legality of encouraging alcoholics or potential alcoholics to continue drinking, albeit at lower levels, without first undergoing a liver biopsy. UK Advocates’ counsel has also been asked for opinion on the possibility of administrative failure by PCTs on the grounds that they fail to offer general practitioners abstinence-based treatment options, and also whether there is a basic abuse of individual human rights when alcohol dependants are denied access to appropriate, abstinence-centred care as recognised by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations.

George takes some time out after the Trust the Process Open Day to talk with Stuart Honor from Hidden Populations Research Limited. Stuart Talks about the ‘road in’ to addiction and the social factors he has discovered through research that lead to addiction. We hear of familiar problems but with a new approach, Stuart has a ‘method acting’ approach to research. He believes that recovery and help should inclusive of all aspects of peoples lives, from abstinence and spiritual wealth to jobs and family, making people into ‘community assets’ rather than burdens.

National Tackling Drugs Week - County Showcase Lancashire, Part 2, Paul’s Story

There was a sting in the tale for the delegates at the Lancashire show case event. As Tom Woodcock began to deliver his final presentation about statistics a commotion broke out at the back of the room. Heads turned and Paul Ward was shouting, “What about the people behind the statistics.” As Mark Gilman said what followed was “one of the most amazing pieces of recovery oriented theatre I’ve seen.” Paul had been working with Motionloco, a group of graduate actors who, with directors Terence Mann and Helen Tolson, produced a piece of story telling that is both personal and emotionally charged. Paul’s Story really does highlight the people behind the statistics.

As part of National Tackling Drugs Week we found ourselves at Preston North End’s football stadium to witness Lancashire Drug and Alcohol Action Team’s County Showcase. There was an expectant audience of people from across the county to listen to words of wisdom from Gail Porter, Mark Gilman and Mark Hindle. The event was hosted by Tom Woodcock and highlighted the progress that has been made over the recent past. This event touched on the importance of recovery as part of the services delivered in Lancashire and there seemed to be a real impetus to move forward that was summed up in the words of Mark Gilman, NTA Regional Manger. There was also a piece of cleverly staged drama that will be featured in part two of our visit to Preston.

Friend of Inexcess TV and local film maker Chase Johnston-Lynch has given us special access to a film he produced at the Candlelight Vigil for Those Lost to Addiction and Alcoholism. The 2nd Merseyside candlelight vigil and remembrance event took place at the Plaza, Metropolitan Cathedral, Mount Pleasant in Liverpool. The event, which was presented by SHARP Liverpool, was a time to remember those lost to addiction and alcoholism. The evening consisted of music, readings, personal testimonies, and a remembrance roll-call. Jacquie Johnston-Lynch, Head of Service at SHARP says, “What we wanted to achieve by having a vigil, was not only the remembrance of those people that have died through their addiction and alcoholism, but also to remember that these people were human beings, someone’s, brother, sister, mother, daughter or son.”

The 2nd Northwest Recovering Communities Conference, Hosted by Acorn Treatment and Housing. Inexcess took the opportunity to look in at the 2nd Northwest Recovering Communities Conference at Stockport Town Hall… and we were blown away. The very grand main hall was bursting to the seams with nearly four hundred delegates from around the northwest. It was a vibrant and exciting gathering where delegates got the opportunity to hear key speakers talk about their organisations and stories of recovery and hope. There was a real sense of community and everyone pulling together and people were busy networking and sharing stories. The afternoon started with an address by Northwest NTA supremo Mark Gilman. George Williams of Inexcess.TV caught up with Mark to talk about the conference and get some thoughts on recovery. We are lucky to have Mark Gilman as a guest on the next series of Inexcess where he will be talking about the NTA, the projects across the region, what’s new and what the future holds for the addiction/recovery sector.

George Williams meets Duane O’Kane

Inexcess.tv’s first international guest in conversation with George Williams. In his search for recovery George Williams is speaking to people in active addiction, people in recovery and those people who have developed strategies to deal with addiction and recovery and have built a frame work of positive ways to live in the 21st century. Duane O’Kane is one of those people. With Catherine O’Kane he founded Clearmind as “a company offering innovative educational and psychotherapeutic programs using an experiential spiritual/transpersonal paradigm.” Well, that’s what the web site says. In reality Duane has a deep understanding of relationships and ways of living in a modern high pressure world. In this film Duane and George range over many issues and topics that have an impact on modern relationships and behaviours. From fears, feelings and emotions to the role of childhood experiences and events ultimately this conversation is in search of why we are how we are and what got us to this point. George says, “It was a privilege to spend an hour in Duane’s company. He is a man with huge experience and insight that cannot help but at the very least make you reconsider your relationships and perhaps begin to change them for the better.”

George and Trevessa’s covert operation took them to a leading supermarket to see for themselves how alcohol is displayed and sold. With £50 to spend on alcohol and £50 to spend on food it very quickly became obvious that £50 will buy you an awful lot of booze but not very much healthy and nutritional food. See for yourself and then tell us your thoughts on the pricing and display of alcohol in your local supermarket.

Inexcess TV spoke to Jacquie Johnson-Lynch about the UK’s first Recovery March that is taking place on Saturday 26th September 2009. The March starts at St George’s Hall in Liverpool at 6.00pm and there will also be a concert at 8.00pm organised by the Spider project at the Liverpool Lighthouse in Walton (about 10mins by car from the end of the march route). It’s important to register the for the event and the organisers are encouraging people to bring banners and flags and to wear something purple or yellow. There are already over 500 people committed to the march so it should be a fantastic opportunity to take part in this momentous event. As Mark Gilman, NTA NW Regional Director says, “There is a recovery revolution happening in Liverpool.”

Dr. Robin Lawrence Interview

Dr. Robin Lawrence talks to George about his own learning curve towards treating addiction. The connection between human behaviour and clinical addiction is intrinsic, and Dr. Robin breaks down and simplifies the emotional processes that drive us and our behaviours. He has a great practical angle on treatment and recovery that I’m sure many will recognise in their own lives.

George talks to Ed Mitchell, the ex-ITN presenter and subject of the documentary Saving Ed Mitchell. Ed’s story is one of alcoholism, homelessness, bankruptcy, divorce and ultimately recovery. The documentary shown in January of 2008 was the beginning of Eds journey to recovery. He describes the experience of bearing his soul on camera, as one of relief and freedom, through the documentary he managed to shed the burdens that had stopped him moving forward and regaining his life. Being thrust back into the public eye, Ed left behind the shame and anonymity that had haunted him on the streets and began to make steps towards recovery. It’s a great interview, Ed shares many insights into his recovery, the thoughts and processes he has been through and how he is living life today. Ed’s book, Headlines To Hard Times, is now available and recounts his story and journey and is available from Amazon and all good book stores.

Outside Edge Theatre Company Interview: David Charkham and Jimmy Page

Inexcess spoke to Outside Edge Theatre board member and therapist David Charkham and Outside Edge Patron Jimmy Page. They spoke about the creation of the theatre company and why they became involved. Both men talk about the success of using drama as a way of connecting with people and helping to communicate the issues and emotions around addiction, treatment and recovery. David Charkham is a therapist who developed his Skills for Life Programme 20 years ago. Life Skills Groups and One to One Sessions enable clients with drug and alcohol dependencies to prepare for the post detox transition from the controlled environment of inpatient settings to the outside world, giving clients the skills to deal with and identify triggers that may threaten their recovery. David also provides sobriety coaching on a 1:1 basis. Having led one of the most successful cultural phenomenon of the 20th century - Led Zeppelin - Jimmy Page know about the power of artistic endeavour. He says - ‘I am delighted and proud to be a supporter of The Outside Edge Theatre Company. They manage, under the guidance of Phil Fox, to produce artistically excellent work that challenges and entertains audiences at the same time as making a real difference. They demonstrate the very real capacity of live performance to positively transform shattered lives. Edge’s work with addicts - and the ways in which their performances awaken audiences and provoke debate - is quite simply stunning’.

Christopher Kennedy Lawford Presentation: The Journey

All people in recovery have the story of their journey. Christopher shares his with us and demonstrates that addiction does not discriminate between wealth and poverty, addiction is classless and ravages you in just the same way even when you are priviliged and wealthy. You can be the nephew of the most powerful man on the planet and it will still come and get you. When it does the personal cost is similar. Christopher holds a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University, a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School and a Masters Certification in Clinical Psychology from Harvard Medical School. Christopher is the son of actor Peter Lawford and Patricia “Pat” Kennedy. He is a nephew of John F. Kennedy, and cousin-in-law of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Christopher’s journey is told with great passion and humility along with humour, and it’s the kind of anecdote that only comes with being a Kennedy – not everyone was taught to do the twist by Marilyn Monroe. An incredible story that’s not to be missed!

We also hear about the differences between recovery in America and Britain, particularly how the United States are leading the way in many areas; as early as 1995 Michael had already begun tackling the problem of dual diagnosis, with simultaneous treatment of one or more problems. It’s inspiring to hear of the success he has seen through this approach.

It’s been a fantastic day at UKESAD. We didn’t know what to expect but were rewarded again with a range of presentations and interviews that have brought insight and views from around the world. We started the day with Christopher Kennedy Lawford who was testament that addiction reaches all levels of society and does not discriminate. We have heard the views of Dr Robert Johnson, Prof Roger Weiss and Dr Louis Baxter. In a slight departure form our normal content we heard Dr Jack Kuo on Video Game addiction. In the afternoon we were treated to The Outside Edge Theatre Company and managed to catch up with Phil Fox their creative force and board member David Charkman. The surprise of the day was managing to grab a few words with Jimmy Page - one of the finest guitarists in the world and patron of the Outside Edge Theatre Company.

Inexcess’s first day at UKESAD has been an inspiration. We have met people from a range of perspectives bringing a diverse view of the world of addiction, treatment and recovery. Brian Iddon MP has brought a political perspective to the debate while we have been enlightened by academics and medical practitioners including Dr Robert Lawrence and Professor David Rosenbloom from Boston University. After lunch we found ourselves in the company of Nick Barton and Kirby Gregory from Action on Addiction. Ed Mitchell shared his recovery with George in an interview of humour, honesty and experience. All these films will be featured in the near future on Inexcess TV. And remember, there is plenty more to come over the next two days from Inexcess. Be sure to come back for more exclusive video highlights from the symposium tomorrow.

Wednesday, 25th March 2009. On tonight’s Inexcess show, George Williams is joined by Tom Fielding, an ex Gulf War veteran, Neil Foster a trauma specialist and Derek Howard-Bud from SSAFA. The subject is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The depth and breadth of this subject is vast, and tonight we hope to gain a better understanding of a disorder that affects up to twenty percent of ex service personnel who see active combat. Drug addiction, alcoholism, depression, mental ill health, violence, crime, prison sentences and suicide are all products of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it’s a indictment of our welfare and health system that we fail to help the people who risk their lives to defend our country. There is a lack of support for our returning troops with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and that gap needs to be bridged. Real lives, real people, real issues…
