Drug Testing, Reducing Use and Supporting Recovery

In the fifth Review Show George Williams talks to Georgie Foster and Rebecca Taylor from Concateno about the role of testing in meeting the objectives of the Home Office Drug Strategy to reduce drug use and support individuals in their recovery.
Drug tests are widely used by substance misuse services, the NHS, drug rehabilitation centres, harm reduction organisations, the prison and probation services; and increasingly by employers. The interview explores the process, the effectiveness and how testing is viewed by drug workers and those who undergo the tests.
Concateno is a drug testing company that provides substance misuse testing services to most of the healthcare and criminal justice organisations in the UK, and carry out more than 10 million tests a year.

Inexcess is proud to broadcast The Homeless Games, an “Olympic Style” games for people who are, or have experienced homelessness.
“Everybody has got a talent, something they excel at, something they love, that they are passionate about and this can help them turn their lives around”.
Drink and drug addiction are often the face of homelessness, mental health problems seem to go hand in hand with the everyday struggle to survive. “We’ve known lads who have had business’s, houses, cars and something very small in life has pushed them over the edge at a time when they didn’t need it”.
The Homeless Games aims to improve the quality of homeless people’s lives by delivering change through sport, health promotion, social inclusion and education, “these are not homeless people who want to play football, these are footballers who find themselves homeless”.

2010 Points of View, a new beginning

If you weren’t there (or even if you were there) this is the film that really gives you a sense of what happened at the Road to Recovery event. Behind the scenes and with comment and feedback from the delegates.
We briefly see the rehearsal day and what the expectations of the event were with comments from the production team and from Nick Mercer the MC for the day.
There’s a real buzz about the venue as people arrive and we see some of the action on stage coupled with immediate reaction from the delegates about the morning’s presentations and the much anticipated appearance of Byron Katie.
A sense of what many of the delegates thought was probably summed up by Damien Prescott from the Wirral Drug Service who came out of the afternoon session saying, “I’m the one that needs to change. It’s not them – it’s me.”

Ed Sleeping Rough: Centrepoint Sleep Out

Ed recently returned to the streets in the Centrepoint Sleep Out, at Old Spitalfields Market in London. The event was designed to raise awareness of young people sleeping rough before Christmas, and to raise funds for the Centrepoint charity. Many of the people sleeping rough in our city centres have an underlying drink or drug problem, Centrepoint aims to give these people a future.
Ed spoke to Seyi Obakin, CEO of Centrepoint, asking him about his hopes for the event and how the recession has started to impact on the number of homeless people in the UK.
Ed also shares his thoughts on his return to the streets, a way of life he left behind little over two years ago.

Interview with John Varley, Barclays Bank

Ed Mitchell speaks to John Varley, Chief Executive of Barclays Bank, discussing the role and responsibilities that big organisations have towards society and disadvantaged groups. Barclays have a policy of helping such groups, including those in recovery or addiction.
Part 1 - By directly offering jobs to people in recovery, boosting their confidence and self esteem, Barclays help people become active members of society. As the world suffers from recession, more people become marginalised, and John believes now is the time for business’ such as Barclays to act, and follow their moral compass.
Part 2 - John Varley talks about Barclays approach to dealing with employees with addiction problems, the effects of the global recession on individuals and the environment in which they work. Volunteering and a an philanthropic attitude are key to Barclays values.

RAMP - Reduction And Motivation Programme, Oldham

Reduction And Motivation Programme
The RAMP programme is a psychosocial intervention consisting of 24 sessions of group work. Service users can enter or exit at any point over a 4-12 week period. RAMP is facilitated by skilled staff with many years of experience in working with addiction.
The core group programme is delivered at various sites across the region including, CDT’s (Community Drug Team), C.A.T. Teams (Community Alcohol Team) and H.M.P Manchester. Recently we have been commissioned by Stockport P.C.T. (Primary Care Trust) to provide an alcohol RAMP within G.P. surgeries.
The RAMP programme operates from a motivational perspective, the main objective is to encourage service users towards reduction and possibly total abstinence. RAMP co-ordinators provide service users with an opportunity to look at the consequences of their substance misuse.
The aim of RAMP treatment is to produce a safe environment that makes concrete the concept of recovery as a...

Coming Together Share

George brings together members of three of our earlier shares, to discuss and summarise some of the key issues that have been spoken about over the series.
Part 1 - Language of Recovery. The group talk about the language that is used in the industry and between clients, specifically the term ‘recovery’ itself. What does recovery mean to individuals? Does it have the same meaning for everyone? As ever, there are many different opinions around the table.
Part 2 - Referrals and Users. In this part, George and the group discuss referrals and the choices that are available to the service users, along with the problems that too much choice can bring. The idea of a ‘centralised, one stop shop’ is on everyone’s lips. There is also a recognition of the shift in demographic of those in need of help. More and more referrals are being made for younger men...

Both George Williams and Ed Mitchell attended the Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards ceremony in Westminster.
The two overall winners in this year’s Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards were announced by Home Office Minister, Alan Campbell, at an awards ceremony in London. The awards, now in their fourth year, recognise and celebrate the unsung heroes who go over and above the call of duty to tackle drug use and drug related crime in communities across the country.
Drug worker of the year
Stephen Holme, from Derbyshire, was named ‘Drug Worker of the Year’ for dedicating more than 30 years of his career in the police force to tackling drugs. He currently manages the Derbyshire Drug Market Project, which he set up in 2001 to investigate and tackle the different drug markets in the county. He was also instrumental in the set up of Lauren’s Link, a charity which supports families...

The broadband station (www.inexcess.tv), which specialises in addiction and recovery, commissioned Ipsos MORI’s online omnibus survey of 1,041 people aged 16-64 to test the assertion made by many of the healthcare professionals and people interviewed by Inexcess over the last 18 months that ‘today most people know someone with a drink, drugs...

They were a very friendly and helpful team who do their very best (with much success) to help those people in addiction get back to work.
Among the project they deliver is Progress2work. Progress2work is a service for people who are recovering from misusing drugs. It can give you the extra support you need to get back into work. Progress2work can help you to: get back into training and work, and sort out problems like your housing, or debts you might have. You choose whether or not to use Progress2work. You don’t have to be claiming benefit to get this support.

Ed Mitchell to join Inexcess.tv

Former BBC and ITN broadcaster Ed Mitchell is to join Inexcess Television as Editor from October 5th 2009.
Ed Mitchell was one of Europe’s leading business broadcasters for many years interviewing hundreds of top financial and political figures. He worked with some of the world’s most respected news organisations including Reuters, the BBC, ITN, Channel Four, European Business Channel (Zurich), Asia Business News (Singapore), European Business News (London) and CNBC. He was regularly on News at Ten, Budget programmes, lunchtime and breakfast television, and a well-known face in City dealing rooms.
His career then took a rockier course. Redundancy, dozens of short term jobs, mounting debt problems, alcoholism, divorce and bankruptcy led to homelessness and sleeping rough on Hove seafront. A quirk of fate got him into rehab and on to the path of recovery – a story covered in the ITV documentary Saving Ed Mitchell.
Commenting on his appointment,...

Marching for Recovery in Liverpool

Inexcess TV spoke to Jacquie Johnson-Lynch about the UK’s first Recovery March that is taking place on Saturday 26th September 2009. The March starts at St George’s Hall in Liverpool at 6.00pm and there will also be a concert at 8.00pm organised by the Spider project at the Liverpool Lighthouse in Walton (about 10mins by car from the end of the march route). It’s important to register the for the event and the organisers are encouraging people to bring banners and flags and to wear something purple or yellow. There are already over 500 people committed to the march so it should be a fantastic opportunity to take part in this momentous event. As Mark Gilman, NTA NW Regional Director says, “There is a recovery revolution happening in Liverpool.”

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Revisited

Here, we take the opportunity to revisit the topic of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), first covered in series three.
PTSD is a debilitating condition that can develop as the result of experiencing a severely traumatic event. In the above film, we explore the relationship between the disorder and its prevalence in servicemen and women returning from the frontline.
Meanwhile, we also hear firsthand how PTSD can change the lives of those it affects, while examining how perceptions of the condition have changed as our understanding of it has improved.
Since we last covered this topic, the number of British casualties resulting from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has increased dramatically, meaning there are sure to be more soldiers returning from active duty who will still be coming to terms with the traumas they have experienced.
With this in mind, the film raises questions about how active service affects...

Drugs, Prison & Recovery Revisited

Prison turning offenders into drug addicts - Illegal drugs are so widespread in prison that more inmates are leaving with an addiction to a substance than when they initially arrived.
Overcrowding and staff shortages mean that prisoners are forced to spend an increasing amount of time confined to their cell. As a result many are turning to drugs such as heroin, cocaine and cannabis to relieve their boredom and as a source of distraction.
An investigation in February 2009 from one such prison, Craiginches in Aberdeen, revealed that 79 per cent of prisoners tested positive for drugs in random tests, however this figure falls to 67 per cent when inmates are tested on release.
The report shows that Aberdeen has the highest rate of prisoners failing drug tests when they are freed, frequently testing positive for cannabis, benzodiazepines such as Valium, heroin and other opiates, and methadone.
Drugs are so...

Inexcess recently caught up with Peter Bentley the founder of Intuitive Recovery. Peter told us about the progress of Intuitive Recovery over the past 4 years and how it has grown from a few people in a room trying new ideas, to an accomplished, accredited course.
Both Peter and Intuitive Recovery as a course have a unique approach and outlook on abstinence and recovery, which has reaped great rewards with over 80% of enrolled clients completing the course last year, and over 45% of graduated clients maintaining or achieving abstinence after the course has finished. Intuitive Recovery is a true success story in the field of addiction treatment and recovery and is widely commissioned across the North West Treatment Sysem. They are now in the process of delivering their unique course via the web and mobile technologies.

Rebuilding Lives on the South Coast - Recovery Through Regeneration

Inexcess was privileged to be invited to the Hope Farm Open Day in Littlehampton, West Sussex. This is a project that brings together fighting homelessness and its associated problems with regeneration of a derelict building and land.
Littlehampton is a friendly, picturesque town, one of those hidden secrets of the UK. If you’re not looking for the signs of homelessness or vulnerable people you would be forgiven for thinking homelessness and connected problems must be in the bigger cities on the south coast.
The Hope Farm Project brings together two major forces for good – HOMElink and Skills in Partnership. At the heart of the project is the need to provide support and training to homeless people including help to find recovery from alcohol and substance misuse.
Users of the project will help to renovate a derelict nursery and its surrounding land and then staff the new project including; a...

Ronnie Purslow - Family Constellations workshop participants

Part two of our film with Ronnie covers the weekend workshop he delivered at Sharp, Liverpool. We speak with Ronnie who led the weekend, Jacquie Johnson-Lynch who was one of the weekend assistants and three participants on the workshop.
Ronnie has written these words to provide background to himself and the weekend and Jacquie has added her thoughts:
In early 2005 I created Innerlight now known as Heartstream. I lead workshops and trainings which integrate all I have learnt through my journey of the last 9 years. I work extensively with, Breathwork and Family Constellations. I have studied around the world with such teachers as Bert Hellinger (Family Constellations) and Leonard Orr (Integrated Breathwork/Re-Birthing) and Duane O’Kane (Transpersonal sychotherapy/ACIM).
Nearly 3 years ago, through training with Duane O’Kane (a transpersonal psychotherapist in Vancouver, Canada) I met Jacquie Johnston-Lynch the Head of Service at SHARP Liverpool. She too was in recovery...

From being excluded by society Ronnie was also excluded in the prison system until the day he was confronted by his two sons – that is when he new he had to change. With the help of Rapt (Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) he turned things around and was able to move on in his life.

UK Advocates, Part 2 - Bob Beckett

Bob Beckett, the founder of UK Advocates and a recovering alcoholic of 22 years, helped open the original Nottingham Priory in 1989 and has acted as an advisor on alcohol treatment both in the UK and the US for the past 20 years. In part two of the interview with George, Bob talks candidly about his journey and battle with alcohol addiction.
His account of a full and successful life is warm, witty and enlightening. We hear of dancing in the Houses of Parliament and how to refuse a drink from the captain of a cruise liner. All good stuff!

UK Advocates, Part 1 - Are we failing to provide adequate care?

In the first of our two part interview with Bob Beckett, the founder of UK Advocates, Bob talks about the organisation and how UK Advocates has sought a leading London counsel’s opinion on possible legal action on the grounds of medical negligence regarding the lack of, or haphazard nature, of individual PCTs treatment provision and the legality of encouraging alcoholics or potential alcoholics to continue drinking, albeit at lower levels, without first undergoing a liver biopsy.
UK Advocates’ counsel has also been asked for opinion on the possibility of administrative failure by PCTs on the grounds that they fail to offer general practitioners abstinence-based treatment options, and also whether there is a basic abuse of individual human rights when alcohol dependants are denied access to appropriate, abstinence-centred care as recognised by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations.

Last but not least of our interviews from UKESAD comes George’s conversation with James and Michael from RIOT – Recovery Is Out There. They share their thoughts on recovery in Burton, Staffordshire. The conversation ranges over their own personal journeys and a coffee shop that has been established to act as a social centre for like minded people.
This is our last interview from the UKESAD conference for 2009. It’s been a great success and provided us with some fantastic insights into the issues surrounding addiction, treatment and recovery. We’ll be back at next years conference with more interviews, more comment and the latest news.

National Tackling Drugs Week - County Showcase Lancashire, Part 2, Paul’s Story

There was a sting in the tale for the delegates at the Lancashire show case event. As Tom Woodcock began to deliver his final presentation about statistics a commotion broke out at the back of the room.

Heads turned and Paul Ward was shouting, “What about the people behind the statistics.” As Mark Gilman said what followed was “one of the most amazing pieces of recovery oriented theatre I’ve seen.”
Paul had been working with Motionloco, a group of graduate actors who, with directors Terence Mann and Helen Tolson, produced a piece of story telling that is both personal and emotionally charged. Paul’s Story really does highlight the people behind the statistics.

National Tackling Drugs Week - County Showcase Lancashire

As part of National Tackling Drugs Week we found ourselves at Preston North End’s football stadium to witness Lancashire Drug and Alcohol Action Team’s County Showcase.
There was an expectant audience of people from across the county to listen to words of wisdom from Gail Porter, Mark Gilman and Mark Hindle. The event was hosted by Tom Woodcock and highlighted the progress that has been made over the recent past.
This event touched on the importance of recovery as part of the services delivered in Lancashire and there seemed to be a real impetus to move forward that was summed up in the words of Mark Gilman, NTA Regional Manger.
There was also a piece of cleverly staged drama that will be featured in part two of our visit to Preston.

Candlelight Vigil for Those Lost to Addiction and Alcoholism

Friend of Inexcess TV and local film maker Chase Johnston-Lynch has given us special access to a film he produced at the Candlelight Vigil for Those Lost to Addiction and Alcoholism.
The 2nd Merseyside candlelight vigil and remembrance event took place at the Plaza, Metropolitan Cathedral, Mount Pleasant in Liverpool.
The event, which was presented by SHARP Liverpool, was a time to remember those lost to addiction and alcoholism. The evening consisted of music, readings, personal testimonies, and a remembrance roll-call. Jacquie Johnston-Lynch, Head of Service at SHARP says, “What we wanted to achieve by having a vigil, was not only the remembrance of those people that have died through their addiction and alcoholism, but also to remember that these people were human beings, someone’s, brother, sister, mother, daughter or son.”

Larry Ashley, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

George talks to Larry Ashley of the University of Nevada about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the shocking statistics that accompany troops returning from active service. More troops have committed suicide on return from the Falklands War, than where killed in combat. The same can be seen in other conflicts, since the Vietnam War, over 58,000 returning troops have committed suicide. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a huge problem, and one that is already affecting troops from the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan and Larry Ashley tells us how there just isn’t enough help for returning troops.

At UKESAD 2009 Inexcess TV managed to get an interview with Christopher Kennedy Lawford, a fascinating man with an incredible life. In long time recovery Christopher talked us through his journey from being a privileged young man to his multi addictive lifestyle.
Christopher Kennedy Lawford reminded us the disease of addiction doesn’t discriminate on wealth background or privilege, but can affect anyone from any walk of life.

Foundations Recovery Network - Michael Cartwright

George is in conversation with Foundations Recovery Network founder, Michael Cartwright. Michael shares his own journey through recovery and how he came to start the Foundations Recovery Network. We also hear about the differences between recovery in America and Britain, particularly how the United States are leading the way in many areas; as early as 1995 Michael had already begun tackling the problem of dual diagnosis, with simultaneous treatment of one or more problems. It’s inspiring to hear of the success he has seen through this approach.

Inexcess at UKESAD - Day Two Highlights

It’s been a fantastic day at UKESAD. We didn’t know what to expect but were rewarded again with a range of presentations and interviews that have brought insight and views from around the world. We started the day with Christopher Kennedy Lawford who was testament that addiction reaches all levels of society and does not discriminate. We have heard the views of Dr Robert Johnson, Prof Roger Weiss and Dr Louis Baxter. In a slight departure form our normal content we heard Dr Jack Kuo on Video Game addiction.
In the afternoon we were treated to The Outside Edge Theatre Company and managed to catch up with Phil Fox their creative force and board member David Charkman. The surprise of the day was managing to grab a few words with Jimmy Page - one of the finest guitarists in the world and patron of the Outside Edge Theatre Company.

Inexcess at UKESAD - Day One Highlights

Inexcess’s first day at UKESAD has been an inspiration. We have met people from a range of perspectives bringing a diverse view of the world of addiction, treatment and recovery. Brian Iddon MP has brought a political perspective to the debate while we have been enlightened by academics and medical practitioners including Dr Robert Lawrence and Professor David Rosenbloom from Boston University. After lunch we found ourselves in the company of Nick Barton and Kirby Gregory from Action on Addiction. Ed Mitchell shared his recovery with George in an interview of humour, honesty and experience. All these films will be featured in the near future on Inexcess TV.
And remember, there is plenty more to come over the next two days from Inexcess. Be sure to come back for more exclusive video highlights from the symposium tomorrow.

Click above to watch Duane O’Kane in conversation with George
“The past isn’t always the past, sometimes it collides with the present, and it’s not pretty”
Duane O’Kane expands on his one step more lecture, discussing with George the way our own minds and past memories work against us in the present; and how our negative thinking can be the cause of our destructive, addictive and harmful behaviours.
The conversation explores how we can change the inaccurate conclusions we have made about ourselves, others and the world around us based on the past that fuel our negative thinking about the present and our fears for the future.

Click above to watch the Duane O’Kane ‘One Step More’ lecture.
“Don’t bother me with the facts I have already made up my mind”
In his second, highly entertaining workshop, Canadian therapist Duane O’Kane explores the notion that we can fail to see the reality of the present because we have already made up our minds based on the past.
Duane explains how our past experiences condition our thinking and how we can interpret situations to prove our preconceived beliefs rather than seeing what is really there; and encourages us to develop three dimensional thinking to be able to see and enjoy the positives and possibilities of the present.

Heroin Addiction & Recovery: An Inspiration - Dave McCollom

Celebrating two years of Inexcess TV.
Probably one of the defining moments of the last two years and one of the most moving stories we have ever heard, David came to the Inexcess Studio in March 2009 and told how against all the odds he found recovery and turned his life around.
Since then David has become a great friend and collaborator, producing a three part documentary for Inexcess and speaking at our Road to Recovery event in January 2010, as well as running his own media company and helping others with their recovery.
In this episode of Inexcess, George Williams meets David McCollom, a remarkable man with a remarkable story. It’s a very moving, intimate and powerful show. As David shares his journey, we get a real insight into his past world, his long struggle with addiction and how he turned his life around. David has been to the...

Mark Gilman - National Treatment Agency

Celebrating two years of Inexcess TV
In March 2009 Mark Gilman head of the NTA North West came to the Inexcess studio to talk about the future of recovery.
A year on many of the thoughts Mark shared with us have become reality, with a clear shift towards recovery as an outcome and a big step forward in the relationship between treatment and recovery.
It’s a very special Inexcess show, an audience with Mark Gilman, the head of the National Treatment Agency in the North West.
Mark talks candidly with George and a special studio audience about the role of the NTA, its successes, its challenges and plans for the future. Once again the scale and complexity of treatment and recovery are central to the show. As you will see, it is a huge issue that affects everybody in the country, and Mark gives us some great insights into how...

Combat Veterans - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

In this episode of Inexcess show, George Williams is joined by Tom Fielding, an ex Gulf War veteran, Neil Foster a trauma specialist and Derek Howard-Bud from SSAFA. The subject is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The depth and breadth of this subject is vast, and tonight we hope to gain a better understanding of a disorder that affects up to twenty percent of ex service personnel who see active combat.
Drug addiction, alcoholism, depression, mental ill health, violence, crime, prison sentences and suicide are all products of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it’s a indictment of our welfare and health system that we fail to help the people who risk their lives to defend our country. There is a lack of support for our returning troops with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and that gap needs to be bridged.
Real lives, real people, real issues…

The 2nd Northwest Recovering Communities Conference, Hosted by Acorn Treatment & Housing
Inexcess took the opportunity to look in at the 2nd Northwest Recovering Communities Conference at Stockport Town Hall… and we were blown away.
The very grand main hall was bursting to the seams with nearly four hundred delegates from around the northwest. It was a vibrant and exciting gathering where delegates got the opportunity to hear key speakers talk about their organisations and stories of recovery and hope.
There was a real sense of community and everyone pulling together and people were busy networking and sharing stories.
The afternoon started with an address by Northwest NTA supremo Mark Gilman. George Williams of Inexcess.TV caught up with Mark to talk about the conference and get some thoughts on recovery.
We are lucky to have Mark Gilman as a guest on the next series of Inexcess where he will be...

George Williams meets Duane O’Kane

Inexcess.tv’s first international guest in conversation with George Williams.
In his search for recovery George Williams is speaking to people in active addiction, people in recovery and those people who have developed strategies to deal with addiction and recovery and have built a frame work of positive ways to live in the 21st century. Duane O’Kane is one of those people. With Catherine O’Kane he founded Clearmind as “a company offering innovative educational and psychotherapeutic programs using an experiential spiritual/transpersonal paradigm.”
Well, that’s what the web site says. In reality Duane has a deep understanding of relationships and ways of living in a modern high pressure world.
In this film Duane and George range over many issues and topics that have an impact on modern relationships and behaviours.
From fears, feelings and emotions to the role of childhood experiences and events ultimately this conversation is in search of why we...

I didn’t quite know what to expect from the evening. Duane O’Kane had come all the way from his native Canada to talk to us about 7 ½ steps to a successful relationship. The talk was hosted by one of Liverpool’s best recovery agencies, Sharp on Rodney Street. Duane was introduced and built up by Jacquie Johnston-Lynch. Now I have a lot of respect for Jacquie but I have to admit I was thinking, “This guy can’t be that good”. But he was. On the Clearmind website it says Duane is “a dynamic and entertaining public speaker.” I couldn’t have put it better. From the off his explanations of how relationships work and what are often the problems within relationships was sharp and incisive. His 7 ½ steps...

Stigma, guilt and shame tear families apart whilst loved ones spiral into the depths of despair. Sharon, a member of the group shares the pain that a mother feels whilst explaining how to detach yourself from “being a hostage” .

Covert Operation: Booze vs Health Food

George and Trevessa’s covert operation took them to a leading supermarket to see for themselves how alcohol is displayed and sold.
With £50 to spend on alcohol and £50 to spend on food it very quickly became obvious that £50 will buy you an awful lot of booze but not very much healthy and nutritional food.
See for yourself and then tell us your thoughts on the pricing and display of alcohol in your local supermarket.

Maggie’s story is one of extremes and takes us on a journey from childhood to addiction. Anybody who thinks that there is no light at the end of the tunnel needs to see this programme.
Maggie also speaks about her work now with Community Voices and how she is putting her experiences into the way she approaches signposting and advocacy for people in addiction or in recovery. Do not miss this...
