White House drugs adviser and Stanford University professor Keith Humphreys opened this year’s UKESAD with an incisive presentation on the fundamental changes arising from President Obama’s healthcare reforms and the new National Drug Control Strategy.

The reforms will extend access to healthcare services to an additional 30 million Americans, and for the first time addiction problems will be covered by health insurance and treated within the healthcare system in the same way as any other condition.

The new drug strategy also advocates an ‘early intervention’ approach to tackle problem use before it reaches addiction level; and help those who overcome addiction by removing disincentives such as federal laws that reinforce stigma and discrimination, as well as providing incentives including financial help to get people back to work and sustain healthy productive lives.
