Video: Depression Treatment: Therapy

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

For people who suffer from depression, it is sometimes hard to know where to begin when seeking treatment, however it is important to keep in mind that depression is a highly treatable condition.

This video summarises the four different methods of ‘psychotherapy’, which is often referred to as the talking cure and can be just as effective to medication. Physiotherapy involves the patient talking about their problems and conflicts in the hope of relieving some of the symptoms of depression and changing their behaviours that contribute to the condition.

The four types of psychotherapy discussed in the following video are:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
Psychodynamic Therapy
Electroconvulsive Therapy

The success of treatment for depression depends on the severity of the depression, the individual and any other medical conditions a person may have. Psychotherapy often needs time, sometimes weeks and months until the benefits of the treatment are felt by a person, and for this reason patience is essential.
