Watch our exclusive presentation of ‘The Work’ with Byron Katie here.
Katie joined us in Liverpool on the 28th January 2010 as a keynote speaker at the Inexcess ‘Road to Recovery’ day, where 400 drug treatment professionals from Merseyside where introduced to the concept and culture of recovery as an alternative choice to substitute medication.
Katie suffered from the effects of depression throughout her thirties. For two years she was unable to leave her bedroom. However, in February 1986, Katie experienced a life-changing realisation or moment of enlightenment; something she calls “waking up to reality”.
Katie began to question her own negative thoughts that she believed sustained her suffering. It is a method that has been compared to the cognitive psychotherapeutic approach which focuses on ‘undoing’ thoughts rather than adding new ones. She believes that unhappiness is not caused by a person’s life situation, but by self-defeating and fear based thoughts that fail to bring relief in the present not help build towards a better future.
She says: “I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn’t believe them, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment.”
