12 step poem

Posted by Tony Mellor on Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Hi everyone. I hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas period and had a great new year!

I have had some time to think about what I would wish for during 2010, the year of recovery. In short, I would like the the MEDICAL services know that 12-step treatment is not 12-step recovery; there is a difference.

To me 12-step RECOVERY is for life. My 12-step TREATMENT helped me find it.

The following poem sums this up nicely:

12-step dream, not a nightmare
The dream was not a vision
Or some premonition like we were told
It was no figment of the imagination
To prove that we could recover and not be bought or sold
The doctor of the medication run
Could be revealed to the intelligent Read the rest of this entry »

A letter from Eric Clapton

Posted by Tony Mellor on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 A letter from Eric Clapton

Hello everyone!

I have found this letter from Eric Clapton and I think that it can be really valuable to those in the recovery community. Have a look about what he says about his lows; I think it shows that we all have a lot in common.

Lots of love

A letter from Eric Clapton

For many years I have visited Antigua, the beautiful Caribbean island located in the heart of the West Indies. Antigua has always been a special refuge – a safe place, a serene place where one can begin the process of healing from even the most devastating events and life situations.

As a recovering addict and alcoholic, many people over the years spoke with me about the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse on the island. Subsequently, around 1993, I began to speak with more and more people about the possibility of founding a Centre on the island for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. There was certainly a need, and so the dream and the vision were born. Read the rest of this entry »

Methamphetamine addiction and recovery

Posted by Tony Mellor on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Hi all! I have been looking around the internet and have found this positive message about methamphetamines.

“Methamphetamine addiction is a disease that devastates individuals and families. Fortunately it is a treatable disease. Each year thousands of people receive treatment and acquire the tools and support they need to turn their lives around. Recovery from addiction - even meth addiction - IS possible. The Hazelden Foundation and Twin Cities Public Television’s Minnesota Channel present the compelling personal stories of six people who are living in recovery. Listen as they talk about their addiction, how they got sober, stay sober, and enjoy life after meth.

Have a look at the video above, about methamphetamines – the messages in it can be of use to anyone fighting any addiction.

Happiness

Posted by Tony Mellor on Friday, December 11th, 2009

Hello everyone!

I have just watched this lecture by a guy called Dan Gilbert
http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_asks_why_are_we_happy.html

Dan talks about the reasons behind people’s happiness and what can make a person happy. Interestingly ‘happiness’ can be synthesised, but often people think that happiness is something to be found. This can be linked to alcoholism/addiction and recovery because when we are given a choice it can affect our happiness, and for me it proves that recovery gives us a healthy discipline.

Have a watch and let me know!

Hi All, 2Tone here

I have been thinking about all the things that influence us on a daily basis and to me, it seems that the most important thing today seems to be ‘image’; look at all the models, people like Jordan, footballers, the X factor, wags.

I have come across this mindful talk about this sort of thing, and it explains how society have hidden things that could lead us to become addicted to anything, whether it id drugs, alcohol, clothes, shoes or food.

The mini lecture breaks this down and makes it a bit more clear:

Why did I hate Brussels sprouts?

Posted by Tony Mellor on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Hello everyone!

So here I go again… I sit here and think to myself, ‘why am I never satisfied in my addiction? Why am I never satisfied in my life?’

And so the journey goes on and I explore my life and recovery and I ask myself so many things; constantly searching and learning as I grow. I ask myself things like, ‘why did I hate Brussels sprouts and now love them?’ and then the process begins. Read the rest of this entry »
