Just because it may be cold you can still stay a healthy individual by using 5 practical steps.

First things first, ensure you have had adequate sleep 7-9 hours. According to Jessica Alexander (spokesperson at the sleep council) the onset of winter it is natural for us to sleep more due to the longer nights. “It’s perfectly natural to adopt hibernating habits when the weather turns cold,” says Jessica. “Use the time to catch up.”

Drinking more milk (semi-skimmed or skimmed), eat more dairy product such as cheese and yoghurt. These are great sources of calcium and will be beneficial to your immune system and bones.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are another useful source for a healthy body Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat. Avoid sugary snacks if possible, substitute with clementines or satsumas.

Regular exercise always helps so try and do something different ie take a bracing walk, the benefits are keeping your weight regulated and also helping your immune system stay strong.

Finally starting your day with a good old hearty breakfast such as porridge, this will increase ones energy levels because of the starch intake and also provides some of your fibre. Try and remember to use semi-skimmed milk.
