Compulsory Treatment In The Community

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Compulsory Treatment In The Community

As reported by the BBC (03 11 08) controversial reforms of mental health issues are being launched.

In essence patients released from hospital within England and Wales may be forced back into hospital if they have not taken medication prescribed.

One must question how far does the nanny state go? Notwithstanding, mental health charities are already stating that the powers are excessive, will not improve the health of the patient and could lead to abuse. Once someone detained under the act is sent home, they can be subject to “supervised community treatment”

Though critics will argue the merits claiming that changes made will only serve in the closure of psychiatric beds and thus save money.
