Dementia and Binge-drinking

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Dementia and Binge-drinking

Experts have warned that the culture of binge-drinking in Britain will cause an epidemic of dementia related illness.

According to Dr S Gupta and Dr J Warner (British Journal Of Psychiatry) who state people are drinking almost double what they were in the 1960s and claimed cheaper alcohol could be a cause.

They also argue that tough new laws will have to be introduced to curb the crisis from escalating.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society says Binge drinkers hitting the town on a Saturday night are becoming a familiar sight, but we don’t yet understand how it will affect the numbers of people with dementia.”
