Three Times More the Risk

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 Three Times More the Risk

A fascinating article in the Daily Telegraph by Rebecca Smith (19 10 08). She writes “Children who drink or use illegal drugs before the age of 15 are up to three times more likely to become an addict or have a criminal record, British researchers have found”, startling figures.

With reference to research carried out by King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry who have established that Britain’s children are heavier drinkers than their European counterparts, have also expressed real concern.

Evidence suggests more than 800,000 children below the age of 15 who regularly drink and 9,000 children were in treatment programmes for drug abuse in England last year. One has to argue who is responsible for these children? Parents and Government are letting these young people down in a colossal way.
