As reported in The Guardian by Tara Conlan (13 10 08), three documentaries are to be broadcast on issues surrounding mental health as part of the BBC2’s Headroom campaign.

Headroom has already featured Griff Rhys Jones charting his anger issues in Losing It and Cracking Up: Alastair Campbell on Breakdown, which aired last night and showed the former spin doctor talking about his nervous breakdown in 1986.

Michael Portillo will examine youth suicide, Terry Pratchett discuss Alzheimer’s disease and Meera Syal look at self-harm.

The parents of Gary a close friend of Porillo’s will be interviewed to discuss their sons untimely death.

Terry Pratchett will give a detailed account of his journey thus far since he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He attempts to search through the labyrinth of science to find some answers or the very least a way of slowing down the process.

Fianally Meera Syal will interview and observe those that self-harm.

The purpose of the programmes is to raise awareness and bring down the barriers of stigmatisation.
